Northern Sinfonia

Bradley Creswick  director / violin

Richard Martin
trumpet

We have a ‘farewell’ at the start of our 2009-10 season! Perhaps appropriately in the year marking the bicentenary of his death, Haydn’s serious joke will end an evening of contrasts: joyous Bach and sombre Barber, Haydn’s ebullient concerto and a string serenade. The Northern Sinfonia, with their always popular director, will again be welcomed to open our new series of concerts.

Yevgeny Sudbin  piano

Yevgeny Sudbin has been hailed as potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century. He made his proms debut in 2008 with universally admiring reviews of his pianistic virtuosity and subtly expressive tone. He presents a truly challenging and contrasting programme of piano music by the masters of the genre from Scarlatti to Prokoviev and by Rachmaninov’s friend Medtner, whose music is now deservedly enjoying renewed interest.

The recently resurrected clarinet trio by John Ireland starts the evening, which ends with the much loved trio by Brahms. Trio con Brio Copenhagen

Piano Trio

Soo-Jin Hong  violin,  Soo-Kyung Hong  cello

Jens Elvekjaer  piano

“Their way of performing is so intense and electrifying it almost takes your breath away!” The brilliant reviews which have followed this well-named Trio promise an unforgettable musical experience. The trio has won all the most important chamber music competitions worldwide and has a busy performing schedule in international concert halls and at Festivals. The concert provides an overview of contrasting musical styles in the development of the trio. Haydn’s piano trios contain some of the most brilliant piano music before Beethoven and Beethoven’s Ghost Trio is a perfect example of the innovative and daring writing that marks his mature music. The atmospheric tremolo effects and sudden dynamic contrasts give rise to the work’s nickname. The concert ends with Ravel’s ravishing Trio which he completed just before joining the army at the beginning of the first world war.

 Piano

The EUCO gives the final concert of the season. Founded in 1981 the orchestra, with a worldwide reputation for musical excellence, draws players widely from the member states of the European Union. They play a programme of contrasts – along with the classical favourites we have the dance-based Capriol suite and the serene Trauermusik. Performing to sell-out audiences all over the world, he is known both as a virtuoso performer and as a serious, sensitive and profoundly musical artist. He won the first National Mozart Competition in England and was BBC Young Musician of the Year. This is the fifth Keswick concert in the Orchestras Live Cumbria Series, funded nationally by Arts Council England and in Cumbria by a grant from Northern Rock Foundation
